Yes, calcium supplements are dangerous if you take more than you actually need. They increase the heart attack risk. Many people are not taking their recommended dietary intake of calcium which puts them at risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Calcium is a mineral and it is found naturally mostly in foods such tofu, seafood, milk, cheese.

Calcium supplements

Sometimes doctors prescribe calcium supplements because they want to be sure that their patient is getting enough calcium daily. But there are people who believe that supplements can increase the risk of heart disease, kidney stones, and stomach upsets.

According to Professor Mark Cooper, taking 500 mg to 600 mg of supplements is safe and effective, but only if you need extra calcium.

Some studies show that there is a small increase in kidney stones.  Also, Professor Mark Cooper says that people with a history of kidney stones or such problems should be careful with calcium supplements.

So what can you do?

The best thing you should do is to discuss it with your doctor. We must know that calcium supplements are recommended for people who need extra calcium. But the best thing you should do is to get your calcium intake from foods that are rich in this mineral. First, you have calculated your daily intake. And if you want to strengthen your bones then exercise. You have to know that physical activity (walking, gardening, doing exercises, etc.) is very helpful in preventing bone loss.

We have to know there are several problems with calcium supplements

Acid rebound can be caused by calcium carbonate. Too much calcium can cause Hypercalcemia which means that the level of calcium in the blood is above-normal. This can cause nausea, vomiting, confusion, and other neurological symptoms.

If you take too much calcium you should know that the large dose of it interferes with the absorption of other drugs you are taking.

Like we already say the best source of calcium is a food rich in it. Also exercising is a good way to protect your bones.

If you feel that your calcium levels are low consult your doctor.
